The Insight Meditation Institute offers the following pathway for those wanting to embark on becoming Insight Meditation Dharma teachers. Following in the tradition of the Buddha, everything offered and provided in this Dharma teacher path both by the Institute and by our senior teachers/mentors is Dana based.
The first step is to let us know of your intention to embark on this journey with us
We will support you to align with one or more senior Insight Meditation Dharma teachers/mentors
You will receive a list of Pali cannon suttas that will form the core of your dharma study focus
A program of study with a teacher will be suggested. This may be regular sutta study groups with Patrick Kearney, or other sutta study programs such as the ones provided by Analayo, Sharda or Bikhu Bodi, or IMS online sutta study
The sutta study program with be supported by sessions with either Subhana Barzaghi or Alan Bassal. These sessions are for integration, reflections on how to communicate the material in different contexts and delivery practice and feedback
There will be separate sessions for developing the skills to work with small groups, one-on-one and conducting inquiry sessions. Developing the sensitivity for working with people in deep states
Part of the mentoring relationship is to get involved in managing retreats that your mentor is involved in. Later progressing to supporting the retreat teachers by leading small groups and conducting one-on-one sessions and then in time moving to take on the role of co-teacher
Encouragement to become active in your local sangha and to get involved in dharma facilitation and giving dharma talks
It is a requirement for those on the teacher path to, at some stage in their journey, sit a long retreat of one to three months
